There are many popular and religious festivals in each region of the island. The most important of these, in the Dominican popular culture, is the carnival.
A festival that recreates freedom, integration and identity, where masks (strictly handmade), exaggeration, imagination, sarcasm, unusual, satirical and grotesque are the main features. Carnival is celebrated in almost every village in the country. The most important of the island is the one held in La Vega, one of the oldest carnivals. The first event seems to date back to 1520.
As many as 103 groups, officially registered in the “Union Carnevalesca”, on the 27th of February, give life to unique parades whose undisputed protagonist is the diablo cojuelo, an evocative representation of the medieval devil, characterized by a spectacular costume with sharp teeth and fiery eyes!
